MIDDLE SCHOOL VOCABULARY WORKSHOP

VOCABULARY WORKSHOP is an integral part of the Middle School Reading curriculum.  Your child has purchased their own book that we use the entire year.  We take a cumulative test at the end of the year on the entire book.  Various study skills are taught in class each quarter that may help students achieve high scores on the unit tests.  In addition to the practice page in the workbook, students are also required to do periodic writing using the words learned for application.  The following is a list of concepts included on VOCABULARY WORKSHOP tests:

-definition  (7 questions)
-stress marks (4 questions)
-parts of speech (3 questions)
-synonyms (4 questions)
-antonyms (4 questions)
-spelling (3 questions)

It is extremely important that parents play a role in helping their children study for the Unit tests.  At least 2 days notice is given for test days to help the student have ample time to prepare for the tests.  They are challenging and require memorization and review of the above concepts.  Partnering with your child will help them gain a broader understanding of the material and increase their vocabulary usage.
Students can now go on-line using the new Holt Literature series for various resources including extra practice, worksheet, audios of stories ,etc.  Each student is given a user name and password in class.  Then, they can go to go.hrw.com plug in their account and see all the wonderful tools this link has to offer!
